Chex mix

Some food historians believe that Chex Mix recipes were inspired by krispies, a popular snack food in the early 1900s. Krispies were made by frying a mixture of flour, water and salt in an iron skillet. The resulting mixture was then patted into a flat cake and cut into small squares. These squares were then fried in lard or butter.

The first known recipe for Chex Mix was published in the Chicago Tribune in 1937. This recipe called for equal parts of corn chex, wheat chex and rice chex to be mixed with salt and melted butter. The mixture was then baked in the oven until crisp.

In the 1940s, Chex Mix recipes began to appear in magazines and cookbooks. These recipes typically called for the addition of nuts, pretzels or crackers to the mix.
